Welcome Yule Press Release

Dec. 7-9, 2012; Welcome Yule: A Midwinter Celebration; Shea Theater, Turners Falls, MA

Across the ages, people have joined together for feasting and song at the darkest time of the year.  Welcome Yule:  A Midwinter Celebration brings the traditions of seasonal merriment alive at the Shea Theater December 7th, 8th, and 9th, using music, dance, songs and stories to celebrate the return of the light.  The Welcome Yule chorus of adults and children hails from all across the Valley, Belchertown to Brattleboro, and the cast members’ pleasure in rehearsing and performing together shines through the show.

Delicious food is featured in this year’s Welcome Yule, the 28th annual production.  Villagers gather in an early English manor house, bringing rich and poor together to feast and celebrate.  The show includes a mix of traditional carols, rousing four-part shape note songs and opportunities for audience and cast to sing together. In a lively retelling of a traditional folk tale, the kids save the day by outsmarting the villagers and providing a feast for all. Juggler Meadow Morris will once again dance the magical Abbotts Bromley Horn dance, and a traditional mummer’s play will round out the performance.

Recent Valley resident Lori Lunn commented after last year’s show, “The Welcome Yule celebration was an absolute joy!  The costumes, sets, story, music, chorus, musicians and other performers were a delight.  It was the high light of our season—intimate, warm, humorous and made our hearts sing.”

The songs, stories and plays in Welcome Yule highlight the pleasures of passing on seasonal traditions of family and community. The cast and crew will be collecting food donations for the Franklin Area Survival Center.  Bring a non-perishable food item and get a free snack at intermission!  Join us as we sing and dance away winter’s darkness and call back the warmth of spring!

Welcome Yule:  A Midwinter Celebration will be at The Shea Theater, 71 Avenue A, Turners Falls, Massachusetts, Dec. 7th and 8th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9th at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children five through sixteen; four and under free.
